FAQs

No. While we welcome applications from licensed paramedics, you do not need to be a licensed paramedic to apply. However, applicants must be certified as an Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) Basic Operations Firefighter and, by their date of hire, provide proof of enrollment or active good standing in a paramedic program. This allows candidates to begin the hiring process while they are working toward earning their paramedic certification.
Gurnee Fire Department firefighters work a 24/48 schedule, meaning they are on duty for 24 consecutive hours followed by 48 hours off duty. This cycle repeats throughout the year and ensures round-the-clock coverage for the community.

The department operates three shifts: Red, Gold, and Black. This schedule ensures firefighters are always available to respond to emergencies.

During their 24-hour shift, firefighters live at the fire station. They inspect and maintain emergency vehicles and equipment, complete station duties, participate in training, respond to emergency calls, prepare and eat meals together, and sleep at the station when not actively responding to calls or performing other responsibilities. At any time during their shift, they must be ready to respond immediately when an emergency call is received.
The Gurnee Fire Department responds to a wide variety of emergency and non-emergency calls, including fires, emergency medical incidents, vehicle crashes, technical rescues, hazardous materials incidents, fire alarms, public assistance calls, and other requests for service.

Because Gurnee is home to residential neighborhoods, businesses, schools, major roadways, shopping destinations, entertainment venues, and millions of annual visitors each year, our firefighters are trained and experienced in handling a diverse range of emergency situations.
The Gurnee Fire Department offers the opportunity to serve one of the most dynamic communities in the region. In addition to protecting residential neighborhoods and local businesses, our firefighters serve millions of visitors each year at destinations such as Six Flags Great America, Great Wolf Lodge, and Gurnee Mills. This diverse community creates a fast-paced environment where no two shifts are the same, providing valuable experience across a wide variety of emergency incidents.

Our firefighter/paramedics work in a professional, team-oriented culture that values training, teamwork, public service, and community engagement. In addition to responding to fires and providing advanced life support EMS, members are actively involved in fire prevention, public education, technical rescue, and other specialized emergency services. Whether you're just beginning your career or looking to grow professionally, Gurnee provides the experience, mentorship, and opportunities to build a well-rounded and rewarding career in the fire service.
