Blue Envelope Program

The Gurnee Police Department Blue Envelope Program is designed to support individuals on the autism spectrum by improving communication during interactions with law enforcement.

This program provides a simple, effective way for individuals to share important information with officers, helping create a calmer, more informed, and respectful interaction.

Clear Communication and Positive Interactions

The Blue Envelope is a clearly identifiable blue folder that individuals can present to a Gurnee Police Officer during an encounter. It serves as a visual cue that the individual may have specific communication needs and may benefit from additional time, patience or support.

The Blue Envelope may contain:

• Driver license or state identification
• Vehicle registration and proof of insurance
• Emergency contact or support person information
• Communication preferences or helpful instructions

While commonly used during traffic stops, the Blue Envelope can be presented during any interaction with a Gurnee Police Officer.

The Blue Envelope Program supports both individuals and officers by encouraging clear and proactive communication, helping officers adjust their approach when appropriate, reducing anxiety and uncertainty during encounters and promoting safer and more respectful interactions.
