The Gurnee Police Department is a designated Safe Haven location under Illinois law, providing a safe, legal and confidential place for a parent to relinquish a newborn infant who is 30 days old or younger.

If you are facing a difficult situation, you are not alone. We are here to help.

Safe Haven

Safe. Legal. Confidential.

A parent may bring a newborn infant to the Gurnee Police Department and leave the child with on duty personnel, as long as there is no evidence of abuse or neglect.

  • You may remain anonymous
  • You may leave after the child is safely relinquished
  • This process is designed to protect both the infant and the parent
Our officers will immediately ensure the newborn receives proper care and medical attention.

You will be offered an information packet that includes resources and optional forms related to adoption and medical history. Accepting this information is completely voluntary.
In moments of crisis, individuals may feel overwhelmed or unsure of what to do. This Safe Haven law exists to provide a safe alternative and prevent harm to newborns.

The Gurnee Police Department wants every member of our community to know that this is a safe place where help is available without fear or judgement.
