This FREE, interactive program is designed for community members who want to gain an insider's view of what it takes to protect and serve our neighborhoods.

Ever wonder what really goes on in a police department? From investigations and crime scene analysis to community outreach and emergency response, our academy covers it all. Participants may experience K9 demonstrations, evidence collection, defensive tactics, drone operations and simulated traffic stops. Throughout the program, officers, detectives and specialists share firsthand insight into the challenges, responsibilities and rewards of serving the community.

Whether you’re a resident, business owner, or a community leader, the Citizen Police Academy will equip you with valuable insights into crime prevention, safety, and emergency preparedness. This isn’t just another lecture series. Our program is interactive and hands-on! You’ll participate in live demonstrations, use police equipment, and engage in realistic, scenario-based exercises that bring law enforcement to life.

Program Details:

  • Fall session runs: September 9 - November 18, 2026
  • 11-week course: Every Wednesday, from 6:30pm – 9pm
  • Must be 18+ and have no felony convictions
  • Attendance: No more than two absences during the training period
  • Completion: Receive a certificate of achievement upon graduating

Youth Citizen Police Academy

Is your high school aged student interested in law enforcement or curious about what being a police officer means? The program is designed to help students better understand the role officers play in the community while building confidence, teamwork and positive relationships with local law enforcement. Whether your student is considering a future career in public safety or simply wants to learn more about the Police Department, the Youth Citizen Police Academy offers a unique and memorable experience.

  • Hours: 9am - 4pm
  • Location: Gurnee Police Department
  • Cost: FREE!
This week-long program is packed with exciting, interactive sessions that will give your child a behind-the-scenes look at the world of policing. From patrol techniques and criminal investigations to K9 demonstrations, traffic enforcement, defensive tactics, and more, they’ll gain an insider’s view of the vital work our officers do every day.

Requirements to Participate:

  • Must attend every day from 9am to 4pm daily
  • Eligibility: Open to high school students in good standing (incoming Freshman to recently graduated Seniors)
  • Background Check: All participants must pass a background check
  • Transportation: Reliable transportation required
