The Gurnee Police Department uses drones to support emergency response and improve public safety. Drones help officers see large or hard‑to‑reach areas quickly, allowing for faster and safer decision‑making.

Drones help officers:

  • Support firefighters during emergencies

  • Improve situational awareness during major incidents

Drones are used only for specific public safety purposes, including:

  • Search and rescue

  • Severe weather analysis

  • Hazardous or hard‑to‑reach locations

  • Large‑scale events where aerial awareness improves safety

We do not use drones for routine patrol or neighborhood surveillance.

The Gurnee Police Department follows strict rules to protect your privacy. Drone flights:

  • Must have a clear public safety purpose

  • Must follow federal, state and local laws

  • Are documented and reviewed by supervisors

We do not use drones for random monitoring or to watch private property without cause.

All drone pilots are trained and certified under FAA Part 107. Pilots complete ongoing training to ensure safe, responsible and consistent operation.
The drone program is supervised by command staff. Each flight is logged and reviewed to ensure compliance with department policy and FAA requirements.

Drones help officers:

  • Respond faster during emergencies

  • Reduce risk to residents and first responders

  • Cover large areas quickly

  • Coordinate with fire, public works and regional partners
