Minimum Requirements and Qualifications
To be considered for employment with the Gurnee Police Department, applicants must meet the minimum requirements and qualifications:-
- United States citizen or Naturalized citizen.
- Minimum 20 years of age (21 years of age by police academy graduation date) and less than 35 years of age as of application deadline unless otherwise exempt. Military Veterans may exceed the maximum age by the number of years served on active military duty but by no more than 10 years of active military duty.
- Graduation from high school or equivalent thereof.
- Valid driver’s license.
AND at least one of the following:

- College coursework towards 60 hours of college credit [must provide proof of 60 hours completed prior to hire]; OR
- At least two (2) years United States military service; OR
- ILETSB Basic Correctional Officer Training certification [submit certificate with application]; OR
- Experience as a full time sworn law enforcement officer; must be able to be certified in accordance with 50 ILCS 705/8.1 [submit certificate with application]
Hiring Process

After submitting your application online, candidates must enroll in the FrontLine National Exam through National Testing Network.
The exam is designed to evaluate skills such as reading comprehension, problem solving, critical thinking, and decision making.

Upon hire, entry level officers attend the Illinois Police Academy.
During the academy, recruits receive instruction in criminal law, traffic enforcement, defensive tactics, firearms, community policing, report writing, and many other areas essential to the profession. Recruits are paid employees of the Gurnee Police Department while attending the academy.

After graduating from the academy, officers enter the department's Field Training Program.
New officers work alongside experienced Field Training Officers who provide hands-on instruction, mentorship, and performance evaluation. This phase allows officers to apply what they learned in the academy while gaining real-world experience serving the community.
